Day 7: Countdown to the finals

This Saturday, July 22nd, was marked by the penultimate day of the European Universities Volleyball Championship. 12 games were played on total, seven of them being on the women’s competition and five of them on the men’s competition.

 

On the women’s competition, the first game of the day was the semifinal between the University of Bologna and the University of Zagreb. The winner of the match, that happened at the UMinho Sports Complex early in the morning, was the University of Bologna, by 3-0. At the André Soares Sports Hall, the 13th to 15th place game between the University Fan Noli and the University of Aveiro took place. The winner was the Albanian team, by 3-1. The semifinals of the 5th to 8th place occurred at the Lamaçães Sports Hall. The Hungarian University of Sports Science and the University of Munster disputed a match which resulted on the victory of the Hungarian team, by 3-1.

 

Another semifinal was played, at the UMinho Sports Complex. The German Sport University Cologne got out of the field with a victory of 1-3 against the University of Valencia. On the finals to the 11th place, the University of Minho lost to the Turin Polytechnic, after five sets played at the André Soares Sports Hall. The final result was 2-3. One more semifinal for the 5th to 8th place happened, this time between the University Vasile Alecsandri of Bacau and the University of Porto. The winner was the Romanian team, with a result of 3-1, at the Lamaçães Sports Hall. The last game of the day on the women’s competition involved two French teams on the 9th place final. The University of Bordeuax won by 3-1 to the Aix-Marseille University, at the UMinho Sports Complex.

 

The games of the men’s competition started by the afternoon, with a match between the Western Norway University of Aplied Sciences and the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. The Croatian team was the winner of the 9th place final, at the André Soares Sports Hall. One semifinal to the 5th to 8th place was disputed at the Lamaçães Sports Hall, in a game where the University of Minho and the University of Valencia confronted each other. The Spanish team won by 0-3.

 

One of the semifinals was between the University of Wurzburg and the West University of Timisoara. The luck kept smiling to the Romanian teams this Saturday, which resulted on the victory of the Romanian team by 0-3, at the UMinho Sports Complex. The other semifinal to the 5th to 8th place also took place at the Lamaçães Sports Hall. The Polytechnic University of Catalonia won by 3-1 against the Nova University of Lisbon. The last match of the day was a semifinal, at the UMinho Sports Complex. Two Germany teams, the University of Rostock and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, disputed a game whose final score was 3-0, victory for the University of Rostock.

 

This Sunday, July 23rd, the finals of the women’s and men’s competition will take place, both at the UMinho Sports Complex. The women’s final will happen at 4:30pm, between the German Sport University Cologne and the University of Bologna. The men’s final will be at 7pm, between the West University of Timisoara and the University of Rostock. The Closing Ceremony will take place after the final games, at the UMinho Sports Complex as well.
